The Golden Girls had a nice run on TV. The original sitcom stretched from 1985 to 1992—180 episodes—with a spinoff called the Golden Palace from 1992 to 1994. And then there’s the foreign cast versions, like the one from Israel which ran from 2011 to 2016.
But the boys at Murray & Peter Present and Outback Presents thought there was still life left in the broads, still more humor to entice an audience. Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue is now on its U.S. Fall Tour, with a stop at Levoy Theatre in Millville on Tuesday, October 13.
“We’ve been performing this show across North America for about four years,” said Vince Kelley, known to playgoers as Blanche Devereaux, the satirical Southerner who has too much sex on her mind.
That brings up the plot. There is a plot. Here it is:
We find Sophia out on bail after being busted by the DEA for running a drug ring for retirees. Blanche and Rose have founded CreakN, a thriving sex app for seniors. And Dorothy is trying to hold it all together with help from a new (much) younger sex-crazed lover.
The girls haven’t mellowed with age.
Vince Kelley must have slipped by you. The fellow who plays Blanche. That’s right the cast is all male.
I wouldn’t say I let the cat out of the bag, but some people know when they get to the theater, some don’t, Vince says. “But they know we are portraying the Golden Girls for them that night, and that’s all that matters.”
“We could absolutely do the show with women playing the roles, but sometimes it takes a bigger foot to fill such iconic shoes, and our production wanted a larger-than-life portrayal of the girls, so we went bigger, literally,” Kelley says. “I would have hoped the original four girls would have loved it.”
It isn’t any more difficult to stage this as four men playing women, except maybe Sophia, he says. The makeup is very intricate, and Christopher Kamm does it all himself. And Sophia is such a fan-favorite character, it’s a lot of pressure to get her right. Chris Davis plays Dorothy and Adam Graber as Rose. Oh, and Tommy Favorite plays Stan.
“I was a big fan of the show, still am,” Kelley says. “Being familiar with the show definitely helps, especially with the impressions.”
How long will the fall tour continue?
“Right now, we are touring until the end of January of next year, and then, who knows,” Kelley says. “I could play Blanche forever and be happy.”
