The Mount Laurel Public Education Fund (MLPEF) will host their 29th annual golf classic at Ramblewood Country Club on Friday, Oct. 16. Registration and lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
“We know that there are so many students who really benefit from our afterschool programs,” said Keisha Taylor, president of the MLPEF. “Out-of-school activities are very important for your social and emotional development and it’s important to continue having those, and we know that we want to be able to support the district and not necessarily have a cost that could be inhibiting to some of our students.”
The golf classic will include dinner, cocktails, prizes and, as always, community support for the township’s public schools. Sponsorship opportunities are available through the MLPEF website, as well as golf and/or dinner and cocktail hour registration, which will begin at 5 p.m.
The MLPEF is a 100% volunteer, non-profit that has donated over $1 million to support technology, after school programs and educational opportunities for Mount Laurel students. Since its inception in 1994, the MLPEF has raised over $800,000 to Mount Laurel’s eight elementary schools. That contribution was largely responsible for the district’s ability to provide technology in each classroom.
“You want to make sure that you have activities that speak to all kinds of learning,” Taylor said. “From mechanical robotics to cooking, you want everything in-between.”
Daily enrichment activities for Mount Laurel students include study skills; fitness; confectionery concoctions; creative writing; yoga; chorus; student council; sports; first aid; baton twirling; theater; STEM; and more. These programs are not only made possible because of the MLPEF, but by giving these young learners the opportunity to benefit from hands-on learning in skills that will prepare them for the workforce, this will help to continue the mission and provide the best resources for teachers and students. But for Taylor, seeing people come together on the day of the golf classic to support a great cause is what all the hard work boils down to.
“Community is where we’re rooted,” Taylor said. “It’s so wonderful to see the involvement and participation from so many different businesses, individual golfers… There’s a lot of enthusiasm around it and so… The resources to support the event is really where we find so much great support. (The golf classic) is one of my favorite days. Seeing it upfront and firsthand, the impact that these extracurricular activities have, it would be great to add more, and the amount of opportunity is vast.”
