Around 3,000 people came out to celebrate Harrison Township Day on June 6 at Ella Harris Park.
The event is meant to celebrate everything that the community stands for, according to the township recreation commission. Open to all residents, Harrison Township Day featured a variety of shows and attractions, including an antique tractor show, tractor rides and blow-up obstacle courses for the little ones.
For adults, the fire department hosted a beer garden and a local band, Bar None, performed throughout the day.
“It went really well,” said recreation coordinator Sharon Chew. “We featured a dunk tank for the first time that a lot of people had fun with. Inspira did free vitals at the event and the support from the community was great. There were plenty of food trucks, which meant there was a variety for people. I had my South Jersey Volkswagen club come in and they showed up with their Beetles and buses.”
Members of the township committee were on hand, some of them inside the dunk tank. Uncle Sam made an appearance to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary early.
Local weatherman Noreaster Nick, president and CEO of NorCast Media Group, helped to predict the weather, which looked dicey for a time.
“It was because of him that we were able to let everyone know in time to pack up everything early,” Chew explained. “We had to close the rides and petting zoo early, but we did manage to get everything together before the rain.”
The event’s closing fireworks show was delayed until 9:40 p.m. Those who couldn’t stay could view it on the township Facebook page.
“It was delayed but still a great show,” said Chew. “Stags Leap Ranch supports us with this and pays for the fireworks each and every year. It (Harrison Township Day) was a long day; it always is.
“But it’s always great as well.”
