Borough teens become leaders in Civil Air Patrol

For two borough teens, Monday nights at the National Guard Armory are more than a routine. They’ve become a place to grow, lead and discover what they’re capable of with the Civil Air Patrol.

Cadet Senior Master Sgt. Ryan Blackburn, who joined the organization two years ago, has steadily worked his way through the non-commissioned officer ranks. Known in the squadron for his reliability and willingness to help, he manages supply responsibilities and represents his peers on the Group Cadet Advisory Council.

Last summer, Blackburn completed Basic Encampment at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, an experience he says pushed him in the best way. He’ll return this year as part of the staff helping new cadets succeed.

Cadet Major Luke Patterson, a Civil Air Patrol member since 2020, is the squadron’s cadet commander.  He attended his first encampment as a nervous new member in 2022, but quickly found his stride. He has since returned each year as a staffer, and this summer, will be Cadet Commander of New Jersey Wing’s Basic Encampment.

Along the way, Patterson has earned multiple Commander’s Commendation Awards for his dedication and leadership.

Both cadets say the same thing about staying involved in the patrol: the people. Friendships, teamwork and the sense of purpose keep them coming back and growing.

The Jack Schweiker Composite Squadron meets on Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. at the armory in Cherry Hill. Youth ages 12 to 18 are welcome to join.
