During the week of April 13, the Mantua historical society welcomed eight fifth-grade classes – a total of 183 students – from J. Mason Tomlin Elementary School to the Union Center for the society’s annual museum and graveyard visit. Students and teachers walked to the center, where they explored artifacts, heard stories of the township’s past and learned how to create gravestone rubbings, a hands-on way to connect with local history. New this year was Manny the Mantis, officially introduced as the newest member and mascot of the Mantua Township Historical Commission. Each student will create a poster highlighting a person, place, object or event from township’s history as part of the society’s history poster contest.
