Since 1976, the dedicated cllub has worked tirelessly to enhance the natural beauty of its community through plantings and other beautification projects.
Evesham Township council offered a proclamation celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Garden Club of Marlton at its meeting earlier this month.
Since 1976, the group has worked tirelessly to enhance the natural beauty of its community with plantings and other beautification projects. From maintaining the herb garden at the Inskeep House to the Leroy Homer Jr. Memorial Garden, the club’s impact is visible throughout the county.
The organization also offers two annual scholarships to students who pursue a horticultural, agricultural or environmental career.
Members of the club were at the meeting to accept the council proclamation. Charlotte Arr, the club’s president, reflected on the group and its volunteer efforts.
“We’re always looking for volunteers,” she said. “You can come to any of our meetings at the Gibson House. (The club) does a lot with the (township’s) parks, planting and flowers. Next month, we’ll be doing some flower arranging with the Wiley Christian Retirement Home, and we have a plant sale coming up in June, as well as a garden expo, also in June, where we’ll be training everyone a little bit about growing things from seeds.”
The group has also partnered with the Evesham library for a program that enables people to obtain seeds for planting and encourages sustainable gardening and bio-diversity.
Mayor Jackie Veasy read the club’s proclamation into the record.
“The Garden Club of Marlton was established to promote horticultural education, civic beautification, conservation efforts and the joys of gardening,” it reads. “Throughout the years, the organization has participated in various community activities within the county, held many special events, workshops, flower shows, plant sales (and) free seed exchanges, co-sponsored the annual Marlton Garden Tour and sponsored educational presentations of topics of interests to gardeners.
“(The township) congratulates the Garden Club of Marlton on its 50th anniversary,” the proclamation added, “and commends all its members through the years for their charitable efforts to grow and nurture beauty in our community and enrich the lives of others.”
Any resident, regardless of skill level, who is interested in joining the club can attend its meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the Gibson House. Learn more at www.thegardenclubofmarlton.org
