The Medford police department reminds residents to stay vigilant when interacting online. Always be mindful of the information you’re receiving and especially the information you’re giving.

Following are tips on scams:

• Legitimate businesses will never demand payment via cryptocurrency, prepaid cards, wire transfers, mailed cash or courier services.

• Customer service, tech support and security companies do not make unsolicited contact or demand immediate payment.

• Real lotteries and beneficiaries do not require upfront fees or taxes to claim prizes or inheritances.

• Be careful what you download. Don’t open attachments from unknown senders or suspicious forwards.

• Keep antivirus, security software and malware protection updated. If you get a pop-up or locked screen, disconnect from the internet and shut down your device. Use pop-up blockers.

• Be mindful of what you share online; scammers use social media and dating site details to target victims.

• When buying items online, request to see the item in person and ask for additional photos or videos before making any down payment.

• Be aware of sponsored links; if a web address looks suspicious, doesn’t make sense or isn’t the exact website you intended to visit, don’t click on it.

If you believe you’ve been the victim of a scam and have suffered a monetary loss, contact the police.
