Shamong sees increased fraud emails

Shamong Township has reported an increase in fraudulent emails purporting to be sent on behalf of local public entities.

The township never requests payments via wire transfer. Because these invoices contain accurate details, they may appear legitimate, especially for applicants who may not be familiar with municipal processes. Residents are advised to verify that any email coming from the township ends in @shamong.net and noreply@govpilot.com 

If unsure of the authenticity of a message from the township: 

• – Don’t reply.
• – Don’t open the attachments or click any links.
• – Don’t send money.
• – Contact the township before taking any action at (609) 268-2377
• – Report the incident to the New Jersey State Police non-emergency line at (609) 859-2282

Scammers often impersonate local governments. Shamong residents should:  

• – Verify sender email addresses carefully.
• – Look for spelling errors or unfamiliar tone/language.
• – Never trust urgent payment or verification requests by email.
