Borough council held its workshop and regular meeting on Feb. 12 and approved a number of ordinances and resolutions.

Among the approvals were New Jersey State Firefighters Association membership applications for Rodney Cortez, Mike Quigley, Frank Friend, Zachary Chalow and Kyle Hughes and submission of an application for a 2025 Local Recreation Improvement Grant for the municipal complex playground.

Council also passed a measure that designates business no-parking areas in the school zone from 132 S. Franklin Ave. to both sides of Clementon Road from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, when Berlin Community School is in session.

Council members were presented at the meeting with copies of a coloring and activity book called “I Spy Long-a-Coming.” Written by Christina Hoffman and Danielle Burrows and designed by Michele Secrest, it’s a product of the Historic Preservation Commission of Berlin Borough, with historical information largely based on “The History of Berlin (Long-a-Coming),” by the late Charles W. Wright.

Long-a-Coming Depot is the borough’s former name and the name of its historic train station. Along with illustrations and photos, the coloring book highlights borough history dating back to the 1800s and features historical landmarks like the former Berlin Hotel.

“Thank you to Mayor Rick Miller and the Berlin Borough Council for their support and permission to move the project forward,” Hoffman wrote of the publication. ” … Enthusiasm for Berlin Borough’s past re-ignited a long-held desire I’ve had to create an activity book to share the town’s history with borough students.”

Councilman Len Badolato recommended “I Spy Long-a-Coming” as suitable reading for fourth- and fifth-grade students.

The next borough council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, with a workshop beginning at 6:30.
