After a dedicated law-enforcement career with the state police, Edward Hainsworth continued his public service in Williamstown, the place he called home.

He was mayor from 1991 to 1992, served as director of public safety and was a member of the board of elections. That’s why the township shared “with a heavy heart” the news that Hainsworth had died on Nov. 15 at 83.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mayor Hainsworth’s family and friends during this difficult time,” the township’s social media post said.

Known by all as a man of unwavering integrity, deep loyalty and incomparable dedication, Hainsworth’s life was a testament to service: to his family, his community and his state, his obituary stated. To those who knew him, he truly was the “greatest man who ever lived.”

Born on April 6, 1942, Hainsworth was raised in Camden, where he learned early the value of hard work, perseverance and honor, values that guided every chapter of his life. He began his distinguished state police career in 1963, rising through the ranks to retire as a lieutenant.

Hainsworth’s leadership, fairness and calm command left an indelible mark, according to those with whom he served.

“Ed was one of my very best friends,” shared Jack Keller in a post on Hainsworth’s obituary. “As a fellow trooper, we spent many times together.”

Those times included poker games, membership in the Landisville Social Club and service on state police committees and details.

“We got married on the same day, Nov. 23, 1963,” Keller added. “His wife and family were really special. I feel proud and lucky to call him one of my very best friends.”

A post about Hainsworth’s passing was on the Former Troopers Association of New Jersey Facebook page; it has garnered more than 300 reactions and 108 comments.

Hainsworth’s commitment to public service extended far beyond law enforcement. After retiring, he continued giving back to Monroe Township, serving as president of its Republican Club and working tirelessly to support and uplift his community.

His presence in Williamstown was one of strength, stability and compassion, his obituary noted.

“(I will) always remember the times sitting on the stoop on Tioga Street,” shared John Sweeney in the obituary guest book. “The best time growing up. He was the sponsor for my Confirmation many years ago. Wonderful guy.”

At the center of Hainsworth’s world, his obituary noted, was his family. For 62 years, he was the beloved husband of Kathryn, a partner in every sense of the word. Together, they built a family rooted in love, faith and unbreakable connection.

He was the devoted father of Edward Hainsworth (Lisa) and Theresa Hainsworth, and a proud and loving “pop” to his grandchildren: Victoria Manfredi (Joseph), Robyn Berardi (AJ), Danielle Smith (Tyler), Jeffery Hainsworth (Megan), and Abby Hainsworth (Colin), the obituary reads.

Hainesworth’s legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy: Ellianna and Joey Manfredi, Ronnie and Morgan Berardi, Grayson and Everett Smith, and soon-to-arrive Quinn Smith. Hainsworth was also the brother of late siblings Fredrick and Raymond Hainsworth, with whom he shared lifelong bonds and treasured memories, the obituary notes.

To know Hainsworth was to know strength, humility humor, and heart, his obit maintains. He led by example, lived with purpose and loved without hesitation. His life touched countless others, and his influence will continue to guide his family and community for generations.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Hainsworth’s memory to an Alzheimer’s or dementia charity of one’s choice.
