Cancer survivor gets proclamation

Mayor Bob Zimmerman and township Committeewoman Eileen Lukens presented long-time friend, resident and advocate Ashley Levinson with a proclamation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 30.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women world-wide, with approximately one in eight women (13%) being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during their lifetimes, and 1 in 39 women (3%) succumbing to the disease.

Gloucester County has the highest breast cancer rate in New Jersey, with 307.1 cases per 100,000 people, accounting for 13.3% of all cancer cases and 7.8% of all cancer-related deaths in the state.

Mantua honors individuals who have fought and are currently fighting breast cancer. Levinson was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in 2023. She underwent a double mastectomy, reconstruction and chemotherapy, and is now cancer free.

The township proclamation states that Mantua stands with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey to honor survivors, remember those lost and support all those affected by the disease.
