Mantua Crime Log for September

In the month of September, Mantua Officers handled 3,067 calls for service, made 66 arrests, wrote 161 tickets, took 248 investigation reports, and handled 45 motor vehicle crashes. Below are some of the more significant incidents which officers handled.

On Sept. 1, police responded to The Barnsboro Inn for a theft. He found that the driver of a white four-door Ford F-150 stole used cooking grease from the business and fled the area. The case remains under investigation.

Police are investigating a theft of building materials from a residence in the 100 block of E. Cumberland Avenue, reported on Sept. 2.

On Sept. 2, a patrolman investigated a burglary at a residence in the 300 block of Pitman Road. The homeowner reported several items missing and identified a potential suspect. The matter is being handled by the Mantua Township Detective Bureau.

On Sept. 3, a patrolman was contacted by a 66-year-old male who reported fraudulent activity on his credit card, totaling $1,800, and that all his account passwords had been changed. The case remains under investigation.

On Sept. 4, an officer investigated a report of fraudulent charges on a bank card totaling $21,170.69. The charges originated from multiple states and are believed to have begun after a purchase at Tobacco Hut Vapes and Cigars, 4863 James Madison Parkway, King George, Virginia.

On Sept. 4, a patrolman responded to the Mantua Target for a report of shoplifting. Two individuals attempted to leave the store with $829.78 worth of merchandise. The male suspect was taken into custody and trespassed from the store. The female was also trespassed and charged accordingly.

On Sept. 5, police responded to the 300 block of Lansing Drive for a report of theft by deception. A 23-year-old woman reported receiving fraudulent emails she believed were from her pastor, requesting $800 in gift cards. The case was forwarded to the Detective Bureau for follow-up.

On Sept. 5, police investigated a burglary at a residence in the 600 block of Topeka Avenue. The 43-year-old male resident reported finding his door unlocked and his home ransacked. The case is being handled by the Detective Bureau.

On Sept. 6, police responded to the Mantua Kohl’s for a shoplifting report. A 36-year-old male stole $627.98 worth of merchandise before fleeing. The suspect was later identified and charged.

On Sept. 7, police investigated a vehicle burglary. The victim reported that the unlocked vehicle had been rummaged through overnight. Surveillance video has been turned over to the Detective Bureau.

On Sept. 10, an officer responded to a motor vehicle crash on Woodbury Glassboro Road. A 29-year-old male struck a utility pole and admitted to being under the influence. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested.

On Sept. 12, police responded to Heritage’s, 938 Woodbury Glassboro Rd., for a glass break alarm. Two male suspects fled the scene, but one 38-year-old male was apprehended shortly after. Another suspect has been identified and charged accordingly. Approximately $840 in merchandise was stolen, and the damage totaled $1,100. The suspect was charged accordingly.

On Sept. 16, police investigated a theft by deception in which a 78-year-old male was defrauded of $400,000 in gold bars after being tricked by a scammer posing as a Bank of America representative. The case remains under investigation.

On Sept. 17, police responded to a report of an intoxicated 15-year-old male walking on Bridgeton Pike. When the juvenile fled from officers, he was apprehended and later lodged in the juvenile detention center.

On Sept. 18, police investigated a scam involving a 78-year-old male who was defrauded of $5,000 by a person posing as a TD Bank employee. The suspect instructed the victim to transfer funds to a cryptocurrency wallet. The case is under investigation.

On Sept. 19, police investigated two separate thefts: a stolen vehicle from Livingston Road and a fraud involving a 57-year-old female victim who was scammed out of $7,700. Both cases were turned over to the Detective Bureau for further investigation.

On Sept. 20, the Mantua Township Detective Bureau investigated a string of car burglaries in the Frankfort Street, Lansing Drive and Pierre Avenue areas. Most vehicles had been entered but not damaged. Residents are reminded to keep their vehicles locked.

On Sept. 20, an officer investigated a stolen vehicle from the 200 block of Montgomery Avenue. The vehicle was later recovered in Camden City by Mantua Detectives. Suspects have been identified and charges are pending. Police also investigated a theft of an electric scooter from a driveway overnight. The case remains under investigation.

On Sept. 29, police investigated a suspicious persons report on East Cumberland Avenue. Two male solicitors were found to be operating without a permit and were cited; both were also arrested on active warrants.

On Sept. 30, police responded to Kohl’s and Target for separate shoplifting incidents. A female suspect at Kohl’s stole $237.96 in merchandise, and another female at Target concealed $233.19 in a cooler she purchased. Both suspects were arrested and charged accordingly.
