“This acquisition reflects our dedication to protecting Medford’s natural resources while balancing growth and development,” township council said.

With a snip of a green ribbon on Oct. 8, Medford Township Council celebrated adding 11 acres to its open space program in the township on Oct. 8.

Council recently approved an ordinance for the purchase of 131 Church Road at the corner of Hartford and Church roads, by appropriating $1 million from the township’s Open Space Trust Fund for the acquisition.

The land, owned by the Burk Jakominich Corporation, was appraised and certified by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres Program at a market value of $973,700, township officials said. Through Green Acres funding, the township is eligible to receive up to 50% reimbursement of the purchase price.

The property is the last undeveloped parcel at the busy Hartford/Church Road intersection and holds both environmental and community importance. Highlights of the purchase include:

• Preservation of woodlands and mature trees adjacent to the Hartford Road open space walking paths.

• Protection of a high-traffic intersection near Lenape High School, Johnson’s Farm, and the Medford Youth Athletic Association sports complex at Hartford Crossing Park.

• Expansion of preserved open space north of Route 70, an area significantly impacted by affordable housing development.

“Preserving this property safeguards an important part of our community and strengthens Medford’s commitment to open space and quality of life,” Mayor Erik Rebstock said.

In a joint statement, the Township Council added:

“This acquisition reflects our dedication to protecting Medford’s natural resources while balancing growth and development. With the support of Green Acres, we are proud to expand our open space program for the benefit of today’s residents and future generations.”

The acquisition of the property coincides with the Township’s receipt of a grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation to construct a pedestrian and bicycle path along Hartford and Church roads from Moorlinch Boulevard to Appleby Boulevard. The new path is presently in design.

The township is finalizing the agreement in accordance with all Green Acres requirements and continues to be committed to preserving open space and natural resources to enhance quality of life, protect the environment, and provide recreational opportunities for residents.

With support from state and county partners, the Township has preserved thousands of acres of land for future generations.
