The annual township birthday party lunch drew 80 residents over 85, as well as two 100-year-olds and three World War II veterans.

The township hosted its 10th annual 85-and-over birthday party lunch on Sept. 24 at the Sapphire Grand – formerly Auletto Caterers – to celebrate some of the community’s oldest members.

The event drew about 300 people, according to the township, 80 of them over the age of 85. The seniors could also bring guests to lunch that was meant as one large birthday party for honorees, who received birthday gifts, door prizes and a cake.

Township council members were also on hand to listen to stories from the celebrated seniors.

“We had two people that were 100 years old and three World War II veterans,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “The stories that they tell and the life experiences they had – it’s one of our best events, and it’s truly special.”

The event also included speeches and a DJ who played some old-school tunes that encouraged guests to dance along. Gloucester County Commissioners Frank DiMarco and Tom Bianco spoke to the attendees.

“Our town does so much for its seniors,” resident Christine Berry Brennan said. “Wonderful place to live.”

“We had 80 over 85,” noted Medany. “That’s pretty special right there. This one is important to show to our residents. Getting to go out and meet these people – for these seniors – is very important.”
