The Berlin Borough Police Department has welcomed two experienced officers into the community as School Resource Officers (SROs).
On August 28, the department introduced Officer Jeffrey Wyld and Officer Michael Gallegos, who will be serving Berlin Community School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Regional School.
Wyld recently retired from the Winslow Township Police Department as a detective after 25 years of service. His career included time on patrol and in the detective division, where he developed extensive investigative experience and worked on community initiatives like Winslow’s “Adopt-a-Cop” program.
“After serving for over 25 years in law enforcement, I realized that the most lasting impact we can have is on our youth,” Wyld said. “Becoming a School Resource Officer in Berlin gave me the opportunity to not only help keep our schools safe, but also to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.”
Gallegos retired from the Lindenwold Police Department, where he worked as a patrol officer for 25 years. He brings with him a range of certifications and training in law enforcement tactics and security practices.
“I’ve always been guided by a sense of duty, and I am a firm believer that our children deserve to learn in a safe environment,” Gallegos said. “Safeguarding that environment is as honorable a mission as one can find. I endeavor to build rapport with students, parents, and faculty so they feel comfortable approaching me with any concerns.”
Lieutenant Joshua Smith praised the addition of both officers, noting the value of their combined experience.
“Officer Gallegos comes with an incredible work ethic and desire to serve, even after retirement, while Officer Wyld brings a wealth of investigative knowledge and strong community involvement,” Smith said. “Together, they will strengthen relationships between law enforcement, students, and families through communication and a positive presence in the schools.”
Both officers emphasized their commitment to being approachable role models as well as guardians of school safety. Wyld highlighted his goal of fostering trust:
“I want students to see me not just as a law enforcement officer, but as someone they can talk to about anything,” Gallegos come.
