Couple fatally killed in Labor Day crash were married 45 years

Police are continuing to investigate a motor vehicle crash that left a Marlton couple dead after their vehicle overturned in Atsion Lake in Shamong on Labor Day.

John E. Hawley and Theresa Hawley, both 66 of Marlton, sustained fatal injuries following a two-car motor vehicle crash on Route 206 at the intersection of Quaker Bridge Road before 8 p.m. on Sept. 1, according to the New Jersey State Police.

A 21-year-old Tabernacle man was driving a Ford 350 pickup truck traveling south on Route 206. At the same time, John E. Hawley was operating a Toyota passenger car west on Quaker Bridge Road, approaching the intersection of Route 206, with his wife Theresa.

The two vehicles collided at the intersection of Route 206 and Quakerbridge Road, police said. After the collision, the Toyota overturned into the Atsion Lake, which is part of Wharton State Forest, a popular destination for swimming, camping, hiking and boating in the Pine Barrens.

The Tabernacle man sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital, police said.

John and Theresa Hawley were married for 45 years, their bond was rooted in deep love and commitment to each other, according to their obituary. Together they created a home full of love and support raising two children, Alicia Buck and John Hawley Jr. and were adoring grandparents to their two grandsons.
