People wait in line at Dominic’s food truck, one of 13 vendors at the four-hour event.
Deptford hosted its annual food truck festival at Memorial Park on Aug. 23 and drew about 1,000 people, according to township officials.
The four-hour event featured 13 food trucks and more than 40 local craft vendors who offered a wide range of products as a way for residents to support local businesses. Food included tacos from Not Your Mama’s Tacos; barbecue from Big Swerve’s BBQ; and chicken wings from Dominic’s Tavern, to name a few.
“We got some outstanding trucks,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “The Boy Scouts are here with their funnel cakes. A lot of local vendors selling their wares, homemade wares. It (the event) promotes local businesses and brings people to the area and promotes Deptford Township.
“It builds community spirit.”
Participants got to meet members of council and the fire department had a tent set up for recruiting and to show off some of its equipment. A DJ provided music, and the local cover band Cynical Z performed oldies. Games included cornhole and Connect 4, and families had access to the park’s playgrounds and splash pad.
“Excellent job as always gentlemen,” resident Nate Belmar said of the festival’s participants. “I’m grateful to have spent a beautiful day with you all.”
One of the goals of the event, according to Medany, was to promote Memorial Park and its features as a major township landmark.
“It exposes the park to so many folks,” he explained. “There are still folks, especially newer residents, who don’t know this is here. All the publicity we could get is good and we want to show this place off.”
The festival was organized by the township’s parks and recreation department. Its director, Charlie Kirchner, was on hand to provide information about the department’s activities.
“I just think we live in the best township,” he said. “I run recreation, but our mayor and council decided a long time ago to make our community the best around, and clearly, (there is) evidence of it today.”
