Families across South Jersey are preparing for the back-to-school season. But while shopping for pencils and notebooks is important, one township child development expert says the real prep starts at home, with routines, healthy habits and confidence-building conversations.
Master Dee Ann Wilcox, a 6th-degree black belt and co-owner of Rev It Up Martial Arts Child Development Center in Voorhees, has spent more than 30 years working with children to develop not just physical fitness, but emotional resilience and life skills. This year, she’s sharing four key tips to help parents and kids start the school year.
“Back-to-school anxiety is real,” she advised. “Children worry about everything from making new friends to keeping up in class. But the first few weeks of school can shape a child’s entire year. That’s why I’m passionate about giving parents tools that build not just academic readiness, but emotional strength and confidence.”
Wilcox’s tips include establishing a consistent sleep schedule; making nutritious meals a family priority; keeping lines of communication open; and celebrating a child’s small, daily wins. She emphasizes that strong emotional habits at home can carry over into the classroom and beyond.
“When children feel supported at home and empowered in their activities,” Wilcox noted, “they thrive, in school and in life.”
Rev It Up’s focus extends beyond traditional martial arts to include social skills development and character education. Wilcox and her team offer year-round programs that help children grow in confidence, discipline and self-esteem. For parents who want to give their child an extra boost this school year, the center is currently offering free trial classes.
“Confidence isn’t something that just appears,” Wilcox explained. “It’s something we nurture daily.”
Her strategies reflect the philosophy behind Rev It Up’s programs. The center also operates Rev It Up Sports & Fitness in Berlin, home of South Jersey’s Best Summer Camp, by offering year-round enrichment opportunities for kids of all ages.
