Candidates push through timed sprints and strength challenges during a physical fitness exam that is part of officer training.
The Berlin Borough police department held phase one of its comprehensive hiring process on June 7, with 20 candidates participating in a stringent fitness examination.
The police department is not only hiring new officers; it also wants to expand its school security team. The recruitment process began on May 2, when the department – with approval from Mayor Rick Miller and borough council – opened applications. The 20 candidates who made it were culled from 40 applicants.
Phase 1 took place at a training site with physical challenges that included a 1.5-mile run; a 300-meter sprint; maximum, one-minute push-ups and sit-ups; and a vertical jump. According to Berlin police Lt. Joshua Smith, the exam was a display of dedication and determination.
“We were extremely proud to see all of our candidates complete the physical fitness portion of the test,” he noted. “No one gave up or quit. They pushed each other in a positive, competitive spirit, and our department had a strong presence to encourage them through the process.”
The department seeks more than just physical ability, Smith added.
“We’re seeking candidates who embody integrity, honesty and commitment,” he explained, “officers who understand the importance of service before self and who are compassionate in the duties of the role.”
The candidates will now move to phase two, a written exam scheduled for June 14, then proceed to later stages in the selection process, including interviews and background investigations.
In addition to full-time officers, the police department is actively recruiting for School Resource Officers (SROs) to support student safety in Berlin schools. The SRO hiring process will include both 40-hour and fill-in positions and jobs are available to retired officers who are certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission and in good standing, or officers currently employed with waivable certification.
The department also seeks applicants with flexible availability and a strong background in community policing.

“We are committed to finding the best individuals to serve the needs of our community,” Smith emphasized. “This hiring cycle is an opportunity for our department to grow with strong, well-rounded officers ready to protect and connect with our town.”
