The Funplex in Mount Laurel will host not one, but two WLSL opportunities later this month to help children gain the understanding and skills necessary to safely participate in water activities.
The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is a global drowning prevention program launched by the World Waterpark Association in 2010. Supported by leading aquatics and safety organizations around the world, the program takes place at all types of aquatic facilities, from huge waterparks to public pools and swim schools.

The WLSL is a platform to help communities build awareness about the importance of learning how to prevent drowning, the number one cause of death for children from 1 to 4 years old and the second-leading cause for those 5 to 14.
A longtime participant in the annual WLSL, the Funplex is elevating its commitment to water safety by creating the first opportunity for families with sensory needs to experience the program there. Over the past year, it has introduced those families to other features at the family entertainment center and water park that are without the crowds, noises and bright lights that can trigger sensory challenges.
Presenting the WLSL in two sessions on Thursday, June 26 will enable Funplex to expand offerings to those with or without sensory needs. They are:
- Sensory-sensitive lessons from 8 to 11 a.m. in the “Island pool.”
- Swim instructors from Five Star Swim School in Deptford who are experienced and trained in sensory-friendly interactions and instruction.
- Access to the Funplex’s sensory room and additional quieter spaces, including the pavilion.
- Lessons presented in a group format that last about 30 minutes
- A lesson for children without sensory issues from 9 to 11 a.m.
In addition, each child’s lesson and admission for one adult per registered child are free. Families will get a $10 discount on admission to the entire Funplex after the WLSL event.
“With two sons on the autism spectrum, I can tell you having these sensory-friendly experiences at the Funplex is awesome,” said Shatia Hernandez, whose son participates in laser tag on sensory-friendly nights at the Funplex. “I haven’t tried swim lessons yet and am excited to get them with a proper instructor, in the quiet space they need, with people who are patient and understand.
“Funplex allows us to feel included,” Hernandez added. “I appreciate them for making the commitment to families like ours.”
Update: Due to an overwhelming community response, registration for the WLSL sensory-friendly event is now full. However, families are encouraged to add their names to the wait list at thefunplex.com/mount-laurel/sensory. Anyone interested in attending the general-population WLSL event, (a free opportunity from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.) can learn more at thefunplex.com/mount-laurel.
