Families gathered in Deptford Memorial Park for the township’s summer movie night on June 6. It was the second of four movie events set to take place during the rest of the season.

The township hosted a movie in the park night on June 6 at Deptford Memorial Park – formerly Fasola Park -where families come together for a showing of Disney’s “Moana 2.”

According to Mayor Paul Medany, the event drew between 150 and 200 people, and the township declared it a success. The mayor and other members of council were in attendance.

“It went great,” Medany said. “The folks who were making the popcorn couldn’t even keep up with the volume of people.”

On top of a movie and popcorn, attendees were also treated to barbecued food and water ice from a Kona Ice truck. An inflatable blowup was used as a movie screen and residents were invited to bring their own chairs and blankets.

“It’s a great way to get families together and watch a movie in that kind of setting,” said Medany. “It’s like what a drive-in movie is, but those don’t exist anymore. We wanted to try and capture that atmosphere.”

The evening marked the second in a series of summer movies in parks around the township. The first took place on May 2 at the Locust Grove Community Center and featured a showing of “Despicable Me 4.”

Two more movie nights are ahead: The film “IF” is scheduled for Friday, July 18, at Kass Maeir Playground, and “The Wild Robot” will be shown on Friday, Aug. 1 at the Oak Valley Athletic Association baseball fields. Both will begin at around sunset, 7 p.m.

The movie nights are organized by the Deptford Parks and Recreation Department as well as volunteers.

“They’re just doing a great job with everything and it’s all good stuff,” said Medany. “As word gets around, more people come, which mean more people get to enjoy these events.”
