The Friends of the Moorestown Library held its annual book sale last month to raise funds that benefit the library itself.

The sale is hosted twice a year, but book donations are accepted year-round at the library.

“The Friends are just a group of people who love books,” said Lynne Schill, president of the organization’s board of trustees.

The Friends of the Moorestown Library – officially known as the Moorestown Free Library Association – have worked to ensure library access for residents since 1853. The group funds resources, programs and activities at the library, thanks to donations, book sales and volunteering. Offerings include youth and adult programming, summer reading and museum passes.

“I think that it’s really important that we have a place where families can come, and there are family activities, there are kids activities, there are adult activities …” Schill explained. “Everybody can come here and experience something.

“I think it’s (the library) part of a vibrant community, and I think it helps Moorestown be a vibrant community.”

The Friends welcome anyone interested in joining, township resident or not. Membership directly supports the programming and resources on which library patrons and residents rely. The Friends hold roughly five or six meetings a year, all open to the nonprofit’s members. Along with the book sale, the group holds special events for members that last year included an appreciation event at the Community House.

“We had a jazz trio and catering and kids activities and people could come and go and dance if they wanted,” Schill recounted, “so it’s just a little give back.”
