The township board of education recently honored Deptford High School’s indoor track and bowling teams for major championship wins in their respective winter sports.

The boys’ bowling team was named the Tri-County Conference Diamond Division Champion after it won the South Jersey Group 3 championship on Feb. 22, beating then-undefeated Camden County Tech in a comeback win for the Spartans.

The boys indoor track team, meanwhile, won the NJSIAA Group 3 State Relay Championship on Jan. 18, its fifth championship in six years and fourth consecutive win. The team was one of 28 who competed at Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River and finished with an overall team score of 43 points.

“We’re here to honor two of our outstanding athletic teams over the past winter season,” said Superintendent Kevin Kanauss of the athletes during the board’s March 18 meeting. He presented each team member with a certificate officially recognizing his accomplishment, as the students’ families and coaches looked on.

A small number of players was late for the meeting because of prior commitments and some were on their senior trip.

Kanauss also acknowledged what he called “an honorable mention” for the high-school wrestling team, which managed to make the NJSIAA playoffs for the first time in 20 years.

“Congratulations to all of our student athletes for all the amazing accomplishments this season,” he said.

The next board of ed meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15.
