The Mantua school district board of education cited several kids as Star Students for the month during its March 10 meeting.
The star student awards are given every month to students who are chosen by their teachers and who best demonstrate a specific character trait. This month’s trait was fairness, explained to a meeting audience of students’ families, by school Superintendent Christine Trampe.
” … “Fairness is treating people equally and giving everyone the chance to be heard,” she said.
“Being fair builds trust between friends and classmates, because everyone knows they’ll be treated with respect. By practicing fairness, we hope to create a community where everyone feels valued and nobody feels left out.”
Nine students were chosen as stars, two from preschool; one from the Evergreen program at J. Mason Tomlin Elementary School; and one from Sewell Elementary; as well as one student each from kindergarten to sixth grade.
The winners for this month were preschoolers Everett Kiernan and Landon Morales, kindergartner Avery Mazaika, first-grader Amelia Hatton, second-grader Gianna Palcko, third-grader Nora Geserick, fourth-grader Emma McComiskey, fifth-grader Owen Snyder and sixth-grader Nolan Stone.
Trampe read statements from the teachers about how each student best showcased fairness.
“He consistently demonstrates a high level of respect for everyone around him, and he is often the voice of reason in the classroom,” Trampe noted of Stone. “He has made it a habit of showing kindness and understanding, even when faced with differences of opinions and perspectives.
“Nolan’s inclusivity and compassion make him a role model to others, and we can always count on him to lift up others around him.”
Two Star Student winners who were absent from the board’s February session were also honored: second-grader Wesley Tweed and fourth-grader Emma Gafas, for best demonstrating the trait of service.
Each awarded student received a certificate, bracelets that were gold for first-time winners and green for multi-time winners, a necklace and a pen that recognized their achievement.
The next board meeting is a special meeting session scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, at the Dr. H. Simmerman Administration Building, 684 Main St. in Sewell.
