The Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission, based at Rowan College of South Jersey in Deptford, is showcasing its winter exhibit, “Portraits by Loren Dann,” through Friday, March 14, at the campus College Center.
The gallery highlights Dann’s artistic exploration of historical figures through portraiture, blending fine art with performance. The founder and executive director of the South Jersey Artist Collective (SJAC), her works are tributes to prominent historical figures, many of whom have been brought to life through the work of local historical interpreter, Dr. Daisy Century.
Through a grant-supported collaboration, Dann was inspired to artistically portray the figures represented by Century, including Harriet Tubman, Madam C.J. Walker and Sojourner Truth. Dann’s connection to historical portraiture began with a piece on Truth, painted after attending a women’s march in Washington, D.C.
Rather than focusing on the struggles the historical figures endured, Dann’s exhibition emphasizes their achievements and lasting impact, employing artistic techniques to convey positive messages. In her portrait of Tubman, for example, she uses a glowing halo effect in the surrounding woods to represent Tubman’s belief that angels guided her along the Underground Railroad she led. Light and dark contrasts in the piece symbolize the abolitionist movement and the end of slavery in America.
Through her work, Dann also fosters inclusivity in the arts, championing intersectionality and unity. The SJAC supports area artists through free community events, exhibitions and projects that make art accessible. She also teaches at local libraries and high schools, using art as a vehicle to tell powerful stories and inspire future generations.
“I attempt to tell the stories of others I extensively research through an ongoing immersion into their lives,” Dann explained.
In preparing for her own portrait exhibit, Dann absorbed knowledge through books, podcasts, TV shows, and music, allowing her to connect with her subjects. Dann is particularly passionate about women’s history and ensuring that its often-overlooked subjects are accurately represented and appreciated.
“She’s always pushing the boundaries,” noted Erika Gardner, gallery director for the Cultural and Heritage Commission. “Especially as herself – as an artist and as a woman.”
A special portrait viewing and live reenactment featuring Century will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, at the campus College Center. It will offer visitors an immersive experience that combines visual art with historical performance.
