Clearview Math League’s Pi fun run and walk will begin and end at the high school stadium. where participants will follow a 3.14-kilometer path.

Clearview Regional School District’s Math League will host its annual Pi fun run and walk at noon on Sunday, March 16, at the high school.

The event celebrates Pi Day on Friday, March 14, and its proceeds will help fund the district’s annual math scholarships for graduating seniors. Participants will have the option of either running or walking 3.14 kilometers – in honor of Pi’s value, 3.14 – on a route that will start and end at the school’s stadium and track.

“It is meant to be a fun way to bring the community together to celebrate the beauty of mathematics,” said Math League advisor Dawn Heil. “I had the idea a few years ago to put together a Pi K as a fun play on words to celebrate Pi Day. “I mentioned my idea to a few students in my Math League Club at Clearview and they were excited about the idea and wanted to pursue it.”

This year marks the fourth for the Pi run/walk, according to Heil. Last year’s event had about 130 participants, along with 15 volunteers. Heil hopes that the number of people will be higher than last year.

“We are hoping to grow that number each year for the next few years,” she said, “and make it a true community event that everyone looks forward to each March.

“It is a fun, non-competitive atmosphere,” she added. “This is not a serious race, but one meant more for families to spend time together. There are prizes for the top finishers in various age categories and every participant gets a mini take-home pie for participating.”

After the run, participants can engage in activities from a digits-of-Pi memorization contest, face painting, and outdoor recreation games like cornhole.

While registration will be available on the day of the event, the league encourages people to register in advance online through a Google Doc, which can be found on the event’s page on the Harrison Township website. Participants must register separately from each other and fill out a liability form provided on the page.

Payment must be received within five days of registering for the event if done online. Clearview students can drop off payment at Heil’s classroom in room 210; others can do so at the main offices of either the high school or Clearview Middle Schoo.

Rain date is Wednesday, April 23.
