The nine recipients of the Arrow of Light awards recited the Scout oath during a ceremony on Feb. 21.
Cub Scout Pack 7045 of Boy Scouts of America hosted the Arrow of Light ceremony on Feb. 21 at Mantua United Methodist Church, where nine Scouts received the Arrow of Light award.
The winners of the award – township residents who are all in the fifth grade – are Thomas Booth, Matthew Croge, Maxwell Denham, Noah Golden, Colin Gorman, Leonardo Grigioni, Lucy Matchett, William Tenerelli and Xinyi Yang. Earning the award means a Cub Scout completes the journey to move on to Boy Scout.
“Today marks a significant moment, not just for the Scout receiving the Arrow of Light, but for their families, leaders and those that have been part of their journey,” said Cub Master Glenn Booth. “As we are gathered here, we are reminded of the journey of learning, growth and commitment for the Scout oath and Scout law.”
To win the award, each Scout had to complete a series of adventures that showcased a valued character trait such as leadership and personal safety. Most of the nine awardees have spent six years gradually moving on to the next stage, according to Arrow of Light Den Leader Christopher Gorman.
“It is not just a badge,” Booth explained. “It is a symbol of everything these Scouts have accomplished. It’s a representation of the knowledge they have gained, the challenges they have faced and the friendships they have made.”
Also at the event were Mayor Robert Zimmerman, Deputy Mayor John Legge and Committeeman John Steen. Township committee members presented each of the Scouts a proclamation and certificate.
“I am pleased and honored to recognize these nine individuals for their hard work, dedication and their leadership in Scouting,” Zimmerman noted. “It’s quite an accomplishment, and I know from my own experiences many, many, moons ago how difficult it is and how much of a commitment it is on top of your schoolwork and other activities.”
Also discussed at the ceremony was the journey each awardee took through “The Story Up the Mountain: From Lion Scout to Arrow of Light,” and the tale “Legend of the Arrow of Light” Both titles were read by Abby Castle and Zuri Essahli of Mantua’s Boy Scout Troop 7083.
Pack 7045 leadership also thanked the families, loved ones and others who played a role in helping the award winners through their journey.
“The achievement is not only a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the Scouts themselves,” Gorman observed, “but also attributes the unwavering support of all the families, leaders and friends that have been there every step of the way.”
