The Burlington County Commissioners have reached an agreement with Rowan College at Burlington County (RCBC) to purchase the school’s former Pemberton campus and demolish its vacant and decaying buildings.

Under the agreement, the county purchased the 225-acre property on Pemberton-Browns Mills Road for $1 million. The deal was finalized last month and voted on by commissioners on Dec. 27. The final sale price was considered fair market value for the property and will provide Rowan with additional financial support, according to the commissioners.

The Pemberton campus property borders the Rancocas Creek and was previously the original campus of Burlington County College, now known as Rowan College at Burlington County. The property has remained vacant for more than five years since the college transitioned to a new main campus on Route 38 in Mount Laurel.

A facilities study by Rowan identified more than $50 million in needed repairs and improvements at the former campus. The study also showed that the Mount Laurel campus – first opened in 1995 – was the preferred destination for a majority of the college’s students.
