A beloved prep cook at Voorhees Middle School has been nominated for the prestigious 2024-’25 LifeChanger of the Year award, a national initiative that celebrates educators and school employees who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of students.
The nomination of Nancy Milbourne – submitted by colleague Tina Artusa – spotlights the former’s creativity and passion for food, as well as her cheerful demeanor and her connection to the school community. Known for her inventive approach to meals, Milbourne has introduced flavors and dishes eagerly anticipated by the middle-schoolers she feeds.
“Food is a way to bring people together, and I love seeing how a good meal can make a difference in someone’s day,” she said.
LifeChanger of the Year is an annual initiative by National Life Group, a 175-year-old financial services company dedicated to supporting K-12 educators. Since inception, it has recognized educators and school employees around the country who demonstrate exceptional dedication to their students and communities.
Honorees can win cash prizes that range from $3,000 to $10,000 and are shared with the winning employee’s school or district to help finance educational initiatives. There will be 17 awards this year and winners are accepted to be announced early next year.
Nominees like Milbourne receive more than just accolades; they also get an opportunity to share their inspiring stories with a broader audience. Each LifeChanger nominee has a personalized profile on the program’s website, allowing colleagues, students, and community members to leave comments of encouragement and appreciation.
The National Life Group Foundation helps ensure that LifeChangers feel celebrated by providing personalized certificates, local press outreach and social media features. The awards invite nominations from across the country, encouraging communities to honor the unsung heroes in education, from teachers who create nonprofits for art and music to maintenance workers who fundraise for school programs.
Nominees are evaluated on several criteria, including their ability to positively impact students’ lives; enhance their school or district’s culture and pride; and demonstrate exemplary leadership, among other qualities.
