American Legion Post 452 on Main Street will be the setting for Tumblin’ Tots classes, the result of a partnership between the latter and the township recreation commission.

The Harrison Township Recreation Commission is once again partnering in the new year with Tumblin’ Tots, an organization that uses exercise to build the confidence of 2- to 5-year-olds.

Its program, which also increases kids’ balance, flexibility and rhythm, will take place each Friday from Jan. 10 though 31; Feb. 7 though 28; and March 7 through 21 at American Legion Post 452. Session one, for kids from 2 to 3-and-a-half, will take place from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Session two, for kids ages from 3-and-a-half to 5, will run from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

“It’s like a Gymboree,” explained recreation coordinator Sharon Chew. “It helps promote health and exercise for the little ones, and just how important it is for them.”

Tumblin’ Tots treats its sessions as adventures in exercise, according to the organization’s website. It uses music, equipment, obstacle courses, tumbling and other features to promote listening; cooperation; and teamwork, among other issues.

“It’s a fun fitness class for the little ones,” said Chew. “They do stretching, obstacle courses and so much more. The commission provides the registration while they (Tumblin’ Tots) provide the service. We’ve been partnering with Tumblin’ Tots for around 15 years now.”

On top of the physical benefits, Chew noted that the program helps both kids and adults build connections with one another that continue for years.

“It’s a great way for parents to meet each other and for kids to meet each other,” she observed. “Some of these kids stay connected with each other and move through school with each other. It helps kids with low self-esteem and helps shy kids come out of their shell a bit. It also helps them learn about important concepts, like sharing, before they eventually get to middle school.”

Parents are required to register their children online at signupgenius.com. Each session has 12 spots, but once one is filled, a waiting list will be available in case anyone drops out.

More sessions are expected in the spring, though registration for those has yet to open.
